Guymon Downtown Conceptual Design Plan
Building off the Guymon DesignWorks study completed by the OU Institute for Quality Communities, Guernsey was selected by the City of Guymon to design and plan comprehensive improvements to its Downtown District. Together, the City of Guymon and Guernsey developed a holistic framework to guide neighborhood revitalization under three primary objectives:
- To provide a “kit of parts” to be used in the pilot project and future development phases, which will create a cohesive downtown experience through coordinated streetscape and wayfinding elements
- To provide a uniform appearance and clearly expressed identity throughout the established downtown area
- To create a unique, multi-use placemaking experience within the downtown area
By taking a collaborative and comprehensive approach, Guernsey produced an award-winning plan that sets the groundwork for a cohesive, interwoven, and engaging downtown. The plan includes guidance for urban design, land use policy, placemaking, funding, infrastructure, and implementation, all according to the unique qualities of Guymon.
The City of Guymon and Guernsey were awarded the 2020 Outstanding Public Initiative by Urban Land Institute (ULI) Oklahoma for the Guymon Downtown Conceptual Design Plan.
