Design Build Athletic Stadium

The existing athletic stadium at Fort Hood, TX was demolished to make way for the new Carl R. Darnall Army Hospital. Guernsey served as the Designer of Record for this design-build new replacement Athletic Stadium.

The new stadium site was located in the southwest corner of the base and presented many challenges to the team including storm water management, existing utilities, and coordination with new overhead power distribution lines being installed concurrently with this project.

The athletic stadium included an aluminum bleacher system with 5,000 plastic molded seats viewing an eight-lane, ¼ mile rubber-surfaced running track that encompassed a regulation football and soccer field. Two large restroom buildings and two concession stands were provided for the bleacher patrons. A locker room building was provided for athletic event participants. A storage building was provided for maintenance staff and equipment. The stadium also included a four-field softball complex complete with dugouts and aluminum bleachers for each field. Both sites included field lighting, scoreboards, and PA system.

The stadium will also be used as a physical training site and entertainment venue for the soldiers and families at Ft. Hood. A new, two-lane asphalt road with bicycle lane provides access to 1,000 parking spaces. The project achieved a LEED Gold Certifiable status with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Outcomes

The project resulted in a multi-purpose facility for physical training, recreation, and entertainment by Ft. Hood personnel and also shared with the surrounding community of Killeen, TX.
