Guernsey Leads Renovation Converting Warehouse to Makerspace at UCO - Overcoming Sound Challenge

Guernsey proudly cut the ribbon on the new Makerspace at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) in Edmond, OK, following a 7-month renovation to convert a warehouse into a state-of-the-art technology center.

The 6,000-square-foot on-campus storage space was identified as the prime location to transition students out of an old lab too small for the UCO College of Math and Science division’s equipment and needs. Working with an existing structure also provided design opportunities needing research.

“One of the design challenges with this renovation was mitigation of noise made by the power tools that would be used in this space. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue, but an E-sports facility currently occupies half of the building. Noise traveling from the makerspace into the gaming room made by power tools, drills, electric saws, and sanding equipment would not be ideal,” stated Jennifer Turinetti, Guernsey project manager on the UCO Makerspace.

UCO performed a sound test on the future makerspace side, and the results of that test helped to inform the design of the wall separating the two spaces. Along with a one-hour fire separation already in the space, the design consisted of metal stud furring, horizontal resilient channels, sound attenuation blankets finished off with “Quiet Rock” gypsum board, and acoustical sealants.

The space, funded by the state Legislature, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and Boeing, will enhance classroom and real-world experiences of engineering students and provide opportunities to promote advanced manufacturing, officials say.

The project was awarded through an on-call architectural contract with the University. Guernsey is the lead design firm, MEP, and Civil Designer of Record.
