Oklahoma City Thunder Practice Facility

The Oklahoma City Thunder required a dedicated training environment that matched the operational demands of an NBA franchise. Game-day performance depends on year-round preparation, controlled access, media coordination, and athlete recovery infrastructure. Without a purpose-built facility, those functions fragment across locations and strain operations. In partnership with the City of Oklahoma City, team ownership advanced a consolidated solution that would strengthen daily training, protect competitive preparation, and support organizational continuity. Guernsey served as Designer of Record for the resulting practice complex in Northwest Oklahoma City.

Completed for the City of Oklahoma City, the project delivers a 54,431-square-foot indoor practice facility accompanied by an adjacent outdoor training environment. The investment reflects a shared civic and organizational commitment to professional sports infrastructure within Oklahoma City. The facility type is a professional basketball practice and training complex, designed to serve athletes, coaches, ownership, management, and media in a coordinated setting.

A Consolidated Training Environment

Professional basketball operations extend beyond the court. Training, recovery, nutrition, coaching analysis, roster development, and media engagement occur daily and often simultaneously. The indoor facility was planned to accommodate these overlapping functions without operational conflict.

Two full-size practice courts anchor the building, supported by six additional practice goals and a wood flooring system designed for high-performance training. Surrounding these courts are the support spaces that sustain team operations. Locker rooms for visiting players and coaches include custom lockers, frosted glass-fronted showers, quartz countertops, steam rooms, a dry sauna, sound systems, and television monitors. A nearby massage area and nutrition bar integrate recovery and fueling into the daily training cycle. A hydrotherapy area further supports athlete rehabilitation and conditioning.

Strength training and conditioning occur in a dedicated training area, while a full-service kitchen provides controlled meal preparation. The building also houses a team classroom with stadium-style custom seating and a video coaching room designed for film editing and review. These spaces formalize the link between physical training and tactical preparation.

Administrative and executive operations are integrated into the same structure. Office areas support team ownership, management, coaches, and staff. A draft room includes custom sliding doors that conceal a draft board, three television monitors, and cameras connected to the building network to allow video conferencing and media feeds. Media accommodations, including an interview room and press conference area, manage public communication within a controlled setting. By consolidating these elements, the design reduces logistical friction and strengthens daily coordination.

Extending Performance Outdoors

Located adjacent to the indoor facility, the outdoor training environment expands conditioning opportunities while maintaining controlled access and site security. The exterior program includes a training pool with a dedicated equipment room, a running hill surfaced with synthetic turf for cardio training, and a sandpit with perimeter sand catchers for conditioning drills. Outdoor shower stations support athlete recovery and circulation between stations.

Site grading manages drainage and transitions between activity areas, ensuring functional continuity during varied weather conditions. Car wash facilities and canopies serve player parking, while a masonry brick perimeter fence with a motorized gate provides controlled entry. Landscaping accents the site and amenities, and a green wall visually screens parked vehicles from the building. Mechanical systems support the pool and car wash operations, and site accent lighting and miscellaneous power requirements extend functionality beyond daylight hours.

These exterior components are not auxiliary features. They broaden the range of training modalities available to the team and reduce dependence on off-site conditioning facilities. By situating them within a secure perimeter adjacent to the primary building, the design maintains operational cohesion.

Design Responsibility and Construction Administration

Guernsey provided Designer of Record services for the indoor and outdoor facilities and delivered all construction administration services. The scope required coordination of architectural systems, specialized athletic flooring, hydrotherapy and kitchen infrastructure, network-connected media environments, mechanical systems for aquatic and exterior functions, and site development elements including grading, fencing, lighting, and landscape integration.

The facility’s planning reflects the dual pressures inherent in professional sports architecture. It must support elite athletic performance while accommodating ownership operations and public communication. It must function daily without disruption. It must protect privacy while enabling media access in controlled settings. The design resolves these competing demands through clear program zoning, secure site planning, and integrated building systems.

Long-Term Operational Value

For the City of Oklahoma City, the practice facility represents infrastructure that anchors a professional sports franchise within the community. For the Oklahoma City Thunder organization, it centralizes training, recovery, administration, and media functions in a single, purpose-built environment. The consolidation supports workforce performance, protects operational continuity, and reduces reliance on dispersed facilities.

Within the sports architecture sector, the project aligns with a disciplined approach to athlete-centered design and municipal partnership. By integrating indoor and outdoor training components, administrative functions, and controlled media environments, the facility provides a durable operational platform for professional basketball in Oklahoma City.
