SH-54 Roadway Design: Widen and Resurface
A 4.8-mile segment of State Highway 54 in Custer County required widening and resurfacing while remaining open to traffic throughout construction. The project corridor begins approximately 11.8 miles north of the Interstate 40 junction and extends north to the intersection with State Highway 33.
The objective of the project was to widen and overlay the existing two-lane roadway, add full shoulders, and extend cross-drain structures along the corridor. The work was completed on the existing alignment while maintaining traffic, requiring the design to accommodate construction sequencing without full roadway closure.
The resulting roadway section provides a 40-foot clear roadway consisting of two 12-foot travel lanes and two 8-foot shoulders. Cross-drain structures along the corridor were extended to accommodate the widened roadway footprint.
At the northern project limit, the intersection of SH-54 and SH-33 was redesigned to increase the intersection angle to at least 70 degrees, improving the geometric relationship between the two highways. The nearby intersection at SH-54 and EW-92 was not included within the project scope.
Completed for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, the project provides a widened roadway section with full shoulders, resurfaced pavement, and revised intersection geometry along this segment of SH-54 while maintaining traffic operations during construction.
